Why "Remain"?

Updated: Jun 28, 2025

Almost a year ago, I stood on a stage at my school district's convocation ceremony with other amazing educators who had been named their school’s Teacher of the Year. As our Assistant Superintendent began to read the name of the chosen District Teacher of the Year and why she was selected, I didn't once think she was talking about me. Fortunately, we were asked to bring a speech, just in case, and that day after my name was read, in front of the entire district, I pulled a crumpled piece of paper from my pants pocket and shared these words:

...The students we teach are the constant. I often say, “the rest is noise.” Sometimes we get lost in the “noise” of education.  When we feel discouraged and overwhelmed, we need to be careful not to give into the noise. Our students need us. Students five years from now and ten years from now and so on will need us. The challenge is to find ways to soften the noise, so that our light, the light we shine on our students every day, does not dim.

Later that day I ran into one of my former student’s mothers, and she said to me, “I heard your speech, and your message made so much sense, “Be the light.” As I reflected on that moment throughout the school year, “Be the light” evolved into “Remain the light.”

In scripture the word “remain” is used to express a powerful, enduring connection, one that persists through change and hardship. When we remain rooted in our purpose, our light shines before others as it is meant to, guiding them closer to their own purpose. This is especially vital for our students, who don’t just need us to show up, they need us to consistently radiate kindness, joy, hope, and a love of learning.

BUT... especially as a new school year unfolds, this is SO MUCH easier said than done. As I strive to remain a keeper of the light for my students, their families, and their colleagues this school year, I hope you will not only follow my journey and walk alongside me, but also encourage others around you to do the same.
